Embracing the New, Part 2
Along with new collaborators, we have a new engineer to record our basic tracks - ‘the skeleton’. All our prior releases have been recorded at Hall of Justice studio here in Seattle. What we loved about the space was its coziness. We felt IMMEDIATELY comfortable when we walked into the place. Great gear (mellotron anyone? glockenspiel anyone? mini grand piano?), great people, awesome room sound.
But Arsen had been our main engineer. With his unexpected passing last year, we searched for a new engineer. Enter Dylan Hanwright. He was recommended by Hall of Justice engineer Mike Davis, who produced our release ‘Afterlife’. While Dylan also operates in Hall of Justice, he recommended a small, boutique studio in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood. 7 Hills Studio has been around FOREVER. But it is relatively unknown, a labor of love by its owner. While the studio is tiny, it was perfect for us (Kerri and Pam) to sit down on chairs facing one another, having Dylan hit record, and letting the raw tracks of “Wild World Away” and “Valley” pour out. Vocals, bass, guitar - backed by a simple metronomic beat. This is how all our songs start.
The 7 Hills session felt SO good. It was what we needed, the intimacy of the two of us pulling together after the loss of Arsen, and going forward, knowing that a chapter has ended and a new one is beginning.
